Fardin Kazemi had been using an American International 9670 lorry from the 1980s to deliver goods from Poland when he broke down. As news of the breakdown spread, drivers came forward to help the man, who was stranded far from his native Iran.
The expedition, which will travel from Poland to Nepal in an old Jelcz lorry, will honour the exploits of the great Polish climbers of the 1970s and 80s, and the first winter ascent of Everest.
Only the second Polish woman to receive the honour, the other being journalist Martyna Wojciechowska, Iwona Blecharczyk now joins a long list of iconic names which include Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart and Naomi Osaka.
Known as the JP2, the reconstructed military Star truck was produced especially for the Pope during his first visit to Poland in 1979.
