Jerzy Skolimowski's ‘emotional’ road movie about a melancholic donkey is nominated for 2023 Oscars

The movie EO (named after the noise that donkeys make) puts viewers in the shoes of a downtrodden donkey as it travels from a Polish circus to an Italian slaughterhouse. Press materials

Chosen alongside All Quiet on the Western Front, Santiago Mitre's Argentina 1985, and the Banshees of Inisherin, Skolimowski’s film is billed as a dark exploration of humanity, technology and nature.

‘Emotional’ film about a melancholic donkey chosen as Poland’s Oscar nomination

The film by veteran filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski tells the story of a donkey, who, wandering around the world, suffers cruelty at the hands of man. Passed from hand to hand, the animal meets both good and bad people in a series of adventures that explore a vision of modern Europe through his eyes.
