District of death: New book tells chilling untold story of how Stalin’s notorious NKVD turned Warsaw district into death centre

Originally a Jewish students’ hall of residence, this building in the Praga district was turned into an NKVD detention and interrogation centre. It is now a police hotel. Kalbar/TFN

In her book, Teoria Wyzwolenia (Theory of Liberation), Anna Straszyńska maps out in detail all the key addresses in Praga where the NKVD set up its interrogation and arrest centres, where prisoners were executed and even where the perpetrators lived.

Polish parliament urges Russia to free Ukrainian political prisoners

The Polish Sejm (lower house) in a Thursday resolution urged Moscow to free Ukrainian citizens held for political reasons in Russian prisons, such as Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, a native of Crimea, who was sentenced to 20 years in a penal colony.
