Forty years ago today Leszek Cichy and Krzysztof Wielicki completed the first winter ascent of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. Public domain

Supported by a 20-person strong team, alpinists Leszek Cichy and Krzysztof Wielicki climbed to the height of 8848 meters, despite the extreme wind and deadly conditions.
