"I must have been inspired" Joseph Conrad
Krzysztof Wielicki

Alpine legend Krzysztof Wielicki takes readers 'inside the mind of solo mountaineering' in new tell-all biography

An icon of global mountaineering, Krzysztof Wielicki’s outstanding career includes being the first man in the world (alongside Leszek Cichy) to reach the peak of Mount Everest in winter and being only the fifth man in the world to reach the summit of all 14 eight-thousanders (mountains over 8000 metres). Private archive of Krzysztof Wielicki

Entitled “Solo. Moje samotne wspinaczki” (Solo. My solitary climbs), the illustrated, 234 page book released on January 12th delves into the climber’s circumstances, emotions and motivations that led him to undertake each of his solitary ascents, with that of ‘killer mountain’ Nanga Parbat, considered by Wielicki as his greatest achievement.

Four decades ago today, two Polish climbers made history with first ever winter ascent of Mt. Everest

Supported by a 20-person strong team, alpinists Leszek Cichy and Krzysztof Wielicki climbed to the height of 8848 meters, despite the extreme wind and deadly conditions.

Himalayas’ King Krzysztof Wielicki adds the Piolets d’Or lifetime achievement award to his long list of distinctions

Awarded annually since 2009, the Piolet d’Or award takes into account levels of technical ability, surpassing limits thought undoable and respect for the mountains and environment.
