Russia has launched an investigation after Poland dismantled "a monument of gratitude to the Red Army" in Głubczyce, in the southern part of the country, the head of the National Remembrance Institute (IPN) has said.
Ceremonies took place in Poland on Tuesday to mark the 41st anniversary of the imposition of martial law by the country's then communist government.
A number of Polish judges and prosecutors are facing the prospect of criminal prosecution for their alleged role in supressing opposition to the imposition of martial law in 1981.
According to IPN president Dr Karol Nawrocki, chief among the renewed investigations are three opposition priests who died in suspicious circumstances in 1989.
At today’s handover at the Treblinka death camp memorial museum, IPN chief Dr Karol Nawrocki said that the objects “are not just evidence of the crimes committed by the Germans but also evidence of victory over amnesia.”
Standing 1-metre tall, the solid bronze bust by renowned sculptor Andrzej Pityński was unveiled this morning following a fundraising campaign to have the sculpture become part of the museum’s new permanent exhibition of the Allies’ Italian Campaign, in which Anders played a crucial role.
