The BBC Symphony Orchestra will give its only concert in Poland on Jan. 6. Those in attendance at the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in the north-western city of Szczecin will have the opportunity to listen to Polish music played by British musicians.
With both a glittering pre and post-war musical career, after surviving the war through a combination of luck, the bravery of pre-war friends and the unlikely intervention of a music-loving German officer, Szpilman was later accused of being a Gestapo agent.
The festival at Warsaw’s National Opera House, which will last to the end of August, includes 50 concerts that will see 91 soloists and 18 ensembles perform 240 pieces, including several commissioned specially for the festival.
Nearly 20 concerts and piano recitals are featured in the programme of the 73rd International Chopin Festival, which started on Friday and will run till August 11 in Duszniki-Zdrój, a popular mountain spa resort in south-western Poland.
The planned Centre reflects the enduring appeal of Chopin’s compositions, along with his unchallenged status as one of Poland’s leading cultural exports.
