A total of 227,440 work permits were issued to foreigners in Poland during the second half of 2019, up from 217,300 in the first six month of the year, the Family, Labour and Social Policy Ministry reported on Friday.
The number of foreign students in Poland is growing steadily, this year around 85,000 foreigners are enrolled in Polish universities, concluded the participants in a Monday-launched "Foreign students in Poland 2020" conference in Łódź, central Poland.
In a survey by the CBOS public opinion research centre, most Poles (62 percent) said that foreigners should be free to work in Poland while 29 percent expressed the opinion that their access to the Polish labour market should be limited.
The number of foreigners running a business in Poland grew by 4,500 to 19,400 people in the last four years, said Sebastian Szczurek, a regional spokesperson of state insurer ZUS, adding that Ukrainians constituted the biggest group.

According to the latest figures from Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS), the Polish-German border accounted for almost half of all the crossings (46 percent). The Polish-Czech border was next (25 percent), followed by those with Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Russia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Polish Radio public broadcaster signed on Tuesday an agreement on financing programmes for listeners abroad.
Some 235,600 work permit were issued last year to foreigners in Poland, with the number expected to be higher this year. The figure is almost twice that of 2016 with 81.7 percent of permits going to Ukrainians.
