Marek Kamiński was the first person in history to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole in one year.
Covering the ground on skis while pulling a 40kg sled behind them, contestants are given a maximum time of 60 hours to complete the course. During this time they must set up a tent and rest for eight hours, and they are also required to take a 4 hour break at some point during the race.
The Norwegian-owned Island of Spitsbergen has a population of just over 2,500 people. Now scientists at the Stanisław Siedlecki Polish Polar Station say they and the island, the largest in the Svalbard archipelago which borders the Arctic Ocean, are under threat as global warming threatens to rip it in half.
