Worst national disaster since WWII commemorated nine years on

On April 10th 2010, 96 people including the then president of Poland Lech Kaczyński and his wife were killed when the plane they were flying in crashed over Smolensk. 

The passengers were on their way to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyń massacre. 

Included in the horrific death toll were government dignitaries, leading politicians, military personnel and their families, as well as members of the clergy, families of those killed in Katyń and government protection officers.
