Working in a box! Is this the future for post-covid office workers?
A Polish company has developed a solution for open-plan offices - soundproof pods with adaptable spaces that let employees focus on their work, regardless of what is happening around them.
The soundproof pods protect office workers from surrounding noise and offer a quiet place for important meetings and work that requires deeper concentration – qualities that will be important as companies in many countries decide when and how employees should return to the office after working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based near Poznań, Vank has 20 years of experience creating furniture for offices and other spaces.
Made up of architects, engineers and craftsmen, its approach combines design with technology.
Its products include the Vank_Wall_Box, an acoustic pod of varying sizes that can be moved around and adapted to the space.
The smallest provides a space for one employee to work at his or her laptop on a specially-designed shelf, while the largest, designed for six people, has enough space for a table and a set of chairs.
The company said: “They may serve different purposes: acting as phone booths or places to relax and gather one’s thoughts, as briefing rooms for small teams, and, finally, as video conference rooms.”
The pods have a glass front with the walls and floor upholstered with sound-absorbing fabrics. Possible add-ons range from ventilation to a sound system.
Using its pod as a starting point, the company has developed new versions that seek to further improve users’ experience at the office.
One features a wall made of air-purifying plants that create the impression of being surrounded by jungle.
Another has a wall made of organic materials that has a “positive impact on all senses and evokes a primitive feeling of our inseparable bond with nature”, according to the company.
