US supports Polish protests on Nord Stream 2 - diplomat

The United Sates has thrown its weight behind Polish protests over the Nord Steam 2 pipeline.

Bix Aliu, the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy, tweeted on Thursday that Nord Stream 2 was bad business for Europe and a clear example of Russia's aggressive actions leading to divisions in the region.

He also noted that the US was committed to continuing cooperation with its allies, including Poland, regarding the energy security of Europe.

The construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline has drawn criticism from the EU's eastern members, the European Parliament and the United States owing to fears it will increase Russian influence over both the Baltic region and European energy supplies.

In an open letter published earlier this week, the Polish and Ukrainian foreign ministers described the pipeline as an “attempt to sabotage Europe’s energy security”.

On Saturday it was reported in Washington that, at this stage, the US Department of State would not introduce any new sanctions against proponents of the Nord Stream 2 project.
