The production of a 2.0-litre petrol engine for hybrid drives was launched at the Toyota factory in Jelcz-Laskowice, southwestern Poland, on Tuesday.

Toyota's new global architecture (TNGA) 2.0-litre capacity engine will be an element of the hybrid drive which will be installed in Toyota Corolla and Rav 4 models in the coming years. It can function as both a hybrid module engine and a conventional engine.

Grzegorz Górski, a spokesman for Toyota Manufacturing Poland, told PAP this is one of four projects that are and will be implemented at the Toyota factories in Walbrzych and Jelcz-Walkowice in southwestern Poland. In this way, Polish factories will become "the centre of hybrid technology in Europe," he said.

The first of these projects, which concerns the production of hybrid transmissions, was launched last year in Walbrzych. The production of another 1.5-litre engine in Jelcz-Laskowice, as well as the production of transmissions for this engine in Walbrzych, will begin a year from now.

"Thanks to this, the Walbrzych and Jelcz-Laskowice plants will be producing complete modules of the electric engines and transmissions, which will be the heart of the hybrid drive," said Gorski.

After the start of the production of the 2.0-litre engines, the Jelcz plant will produce 300,000 drive units annually. Following the launch of all the projects in both factories, 1.5 million car components will be produced each year.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, in a letter addressed to the participants at the ceremony launching the production of the new engine, stated this was proof that Poland was "taking another step in the development of an economically strong and innovative Poland." He added "this was an important step on the path to full electric mobility."

As a result of the new projects, employment in the Toyota factories will increase by several hundred people.
