TVPInfo.pl – Poland's Border Guard and Police Central Investigation Bureau (CBSP) have detained a 48-year-old Polish woman who allegedly ran a criminal organisation smuggling migrants across Poland's eastern border and further on to other European countries, the state-owned news channel TVP Info reported. CBSP spokesperson Iwona Jurkiewicz said that the gang could have been operating for several years, mainly in Poland, but also in other EU member states. "Evidence indicates that irregular migrants from Asia and Africa were being smuggled across Poland's eastern border, from Belarus through Lithuania to Poland, which was the destination or a transit country to other European countries," Jurkiewicz said.
TVN24.pl – Two firemen died in a fire engine crash in Zukowo, northern Poland, on Friday morning, after their fire engine collided with a lorry and overturned, the news channel TVN24 reported. They were responding to a call reporting another car crash in a nearby village.
Wyborcza.pl – Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau was aware of irregularities in the Polish visa issuance system, the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza wrote. According to Wyborcza, business lobbies had complained about the situation to the ministry, while the Interior Ministry, Agriculture Ministry and special law enforcement services had also been aware of the problem.
Rp.pl - Poland's plans to buy out LiuGong Dressta Machinery (LDM), a construction machinery plant located in the south-eastern city of Stalowa Wola, from its now Chinese owners, have likely fallen through, the newspaper Rzeczpospolita wrote, citing insider information. By making the re-purchase of a company that had earlier been privatised, the Polish government wanted make use of expert employees at LDM to bolster production capacity of the adjacent Polish arms manufacturer HSW.
