TFN’s website design basks in the glory at design award festival
The First News has picked up a distinction at the 26th Good Design awards for its website during a ceremony honouring the best in Polish design.
Organised by the Institute of Industrial Design the competition recognises the best Polish designs that combine aesthetic and functional value. TFN was recognised in the Product of the Year 2019 category bestowed upon it by the Industrial Development Agency. The website’s neat, minimalistic design, inspired by traditional newspapers was created by Dominika Szczechowicz, who previously worked for The Japan Times, Newsweek and Cosmopolitan.
The Good Design awards cover nine categories, such as work, the public sphere, transport and services. In addition, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Technology and the organisers present further prizes for Design, Design for Culture and Product of the Year. TFN received a distinction in this last category, while the MOBOT AGV FlatRunner MW mobile robot was the laureate.
The other winners included the Hermes dronoid designed by Sławomir Huczała, Andrzej Klisz’s Flow urban furniture collection, Pucio children’s books written by Marta Galewska-Kustra and illustrated by Joanna Kłos, the mobile application carQ.pl created by Kajetan and Tomasz Rogalski, as well as several others.
Dagmara Leszkowicz, TFN’s editor-in-chief, received the distinction during the Good Design official gala, held at the Institute of Industrial Design on Thursday. The Minister of Culture Piotr Gliński and the Institute’s Chairman of the Board Bożena Gargas, who presided over the ceremony, emphasised the importance of combining aesthetics and functionality in everyday design, which also helps develop the economy.
Gargas stated that: “Without public awareness of the existence of a product or service, there is no brand recognition, and therefore every year the ‘Good Design’ competition shapes awareness of the need for good design, as well as explains the essence of design by presenting innovative and successfully implemented design solutions."
The Good Design is the oldest Polish design competition, which for 25 years has been spotlighting the most impressive and aesthetically interesting concepts. Established by the Institute of Industrial Design in 1993, according to the organisers: “it was to be a way to select and reward the products of new Polish producers, distinguishing them from foreign and PRL designs.”
The competition ensures its impartiality and reliability by foregoing any sponsoring. The services and products recognised by the jury are identified by researchers and experts from the Institute of Industrial Design through continuous market monitoring. Due to this method, it is Poland’s only independent “design audit”, which focuses on the quality of design, originality and market trends.
The post-competition exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday from October 25 to December 1 at the Institute of Industrial Design in Warsaw.
