Spring 2024 ideal time for local elections says president

The spring of 2024 would be the “optimal” date for the local elections, Poland's president told the Wprost weekly on Thursday.

Poland's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has announced plans to move local elections from their original 2023 date to the following year owing to their clashing with next year's parliamentary elections.

A government official said on Wednesday that the local vote would probably take place on April 7 or 14, 2024.

President Andrzej Duda said that moving the elections to 2024 makes sense.

"For the sake of political transparency, equal opportunities and easing the pressure caused by the parties which are campaigning, the parliamentary and local elections should be separated. The spring of 2024 seems an optimal date for the local elections," Duda said.

Asked about possible changes to the election laws, including alleged plans to divide the country into a hundred constituencies, Duda said that "no serious talks" on the matter had taken place as yet.
