A Polish firm has given wine lovers looking for something that little bit different by rolling out what it claims is Europe’s first hemp wine.

The wine, “Wino Lino Konopie”, comes in the form of a semi-sweet red infused with hemp extract, which gives the drink both a distinctive taste and, say its producers, beneficial properties.

The unusual red comes from AWE, a producer of alcoholic drinks based in Bielsko-Biała, working in co-operation with dobrekonopie.pl, a company selling hemp-based health products.

“I have been interested in cannabis for years and had the idea of creating a wine with a herbal infusion,” said Marta Frygier, a certified phytotherapist—an expert in medical herbalism--and the brains behind the wine at AWE.

She added that wine comes with vitamin B12 and, if drunk in moderation, can fight the aging process and be good for health.

“Adding extract from selected herbs can enhance these properties and adds the plant’s own beneficial properties,” she continued.

Hemp, a strain of the cannabis sativa plant, is fast growing and has a number of commercial uses despite its association with illicit drugs.

It has low concentrations of THCs, the elements that induce psychoactive effects, and instead has high concentrations of CBDs, which can alleviate pain and anxiety, and help people with movement disorders.

Apparently, to get the full benefits of the hemp wine, drinkers should only consume about 120ml, perhaps in the evening as a relaxing drink or before a meal.

It should also be stored in the fridge after opening.

Given the growing interest in the health properties of the hemp plant, and gradual legal relaxations of its production and use around the world, hemp wine is slowly taking root.

In the US, for example, producers have recently started corking bottles of the drink.
