Poland’s opposition party Nowoczesna on Saturday elected by acclamation deputy parliamentary Speaker Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska as its candidate for the country’s presidential elections in May this year.

Kidawa-Blonska had already been chosen a presidential candidate of Poland’s major opposition party Civic Platform (PO) at PO's national convention held on December 14, 2019.

"These are not symbolic decisions, these are fundamental elections which must win," Nowoczesna's chairman Adam Szlapka said during the Saturday meeting of the party's National Council.

"It is time to change Polish politics," Kidawa-Blonska said after the decision of Nowoczesna's National Council was announced. She added that the president cannot be an addition to the ruling party. "The president must be brave and independent" and therefore "Andrzej Duda cannot continue to be president," she said.
