A spokesperson for the Polish Foreign Ministry has said that 45 Polish diplomats and consular employees have been expelled from Russia.

Łukasz Jasina told the Polish Press Agency that the staff had been asked to leave.

Earlier on Friday he had said that Krzysztof Krajewski, the Polish ambassador to Moscow, had been summoned to Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The expulsion appears to be a diplomatic tit-for-tat move following Poland's decision on March 23 to expel 45 people from the Russian embassy in Warsaw.

At the time, Stanisław Żaryn, a senior security official, said the 45 who had been expelled were working under so-called diplomatic cover and had been carrying our intelligence activities in Poland for the Russian foreign ministry.
