International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Gdansk, north Poland for his contribution to the development of the international Olympic movement and promotion of human rights and global peace.

The IOC president said at the Wednesday ceremony that although he did not believe that sport and the Olympic Games could prevent wars and conflicts, the gathering of athletes together in peaceful competition could show what the world might look like if everyone were guided by Olympic values.

Bach, a German lawyer and former Olympic fencer, has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1991, and was elected as its President in 2013.
