Polish President Andrzej Duda has sent his condolences to the families of the victims of Tuesday's massive explosion in the Lebanese capital Beirut, which killed nearly 80 people and injured thousands.

"Tragedy in Lebanon. Massive destruction in Beirut after the explosion of flammable substances. Dozens of dead, thousands of wounded. Armageddon. I join in the pain that has befallen the families of the victims," Duda wrote on Twitter in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.

According to the Lebanese health ministry, the blast in Beirut has killed nearly 80 people and injured more than 4,000. The victim count is still rising.

The blast was supposedly caused by a fire in a harbour depot containing dangerous chemicals.
