President asks parliament speaker for special session on coronavirus

Polish President Andrzej Duda asked Sejm (lower house) Speaker Elzbieta Witek on Wednesday to convene a special session of the house to hear the government's report on the coronavirus threat.

According to the president, parliament should pass adequate legislature which would help in the possible struggle with the coronavirus.

Speaking during a press briefing, Duda said that during a Wednesday meeting with PM Mateusz Morawiecki, Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski and Chief Sanitary Inspector Jaroslaw Pinkas he was briefed on the state of preparations in Poland and the situation in Europe in view of the spread of the coronavirus.

The president said that so far there are no reported cases of the virus in Poland, but added that one should expect that the virus will also reach Poland.

President Duda assured that necessary procedures have been introduced at all Polish airports and remaining centres of international transport. He added that hospital wards have been adequately prepared to receive infected persons.
