Popularity of payment cards grows in Poland

The number of payment cards on the Polish market increased by 404,000 to 42.1 mln at the end of Q2 this year, compared to the end of March, reported the National Bank of Poland (NBP) on Thursday.

According to NBP, debit cards were the most popular type of card and made up 79.6 pct of the total of payment cards. Their number increased by 1 pct to 33.5 mln cards at the end of June this year, compared to the end of Q1, 2019.

Credit cards were the second most popular type of card in Poland. They made up 13.9 pct of the total of payment cards and their number was 5.83 mln at the end of June. NBP data showed that the number of credit cards in Q2 decreased by 34,000, a drop of 0.6 pct.

The central bank noted that it expected a further increase in the number of contactless payment cards. At the end of June 2019, there were 36.1 mln such cards in Poland. Over the quarter, the number of cards increased by 698,000.
