Polish football player Robert Lewandowski has been named the best footballer on the planet for the 2019/20 season in this year's goal.com GOAL 50 poll.

"It feels very good to win an individual title, it's another nice extra," said Lewandowski, who is also captain of the national team.

"Football is a team sport, but these additional awards mean a lot to me too," he continued. "It shows that the hard work you put in every day will one day pay off. As long as you play football, you have to stay hungry. After your career you can think about what you have won. Getting to the top is difficult, but staying at the top is even more difficult."

In the 2019/20 season, Lewandowski won the triple crown with Bayern Munich by becoming the top goal-scorer in the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Champions League.

"The striker scored a staggering 55 goals in 47 games during Bayern Munich's treble-winning campaign, finishing as top scorer in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League," the goal.com website wrote. "Nobody else even came close to matching those numbers in 2020 – not even Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi – making Lewandowski a most worthy recipient of his first Goal 50 award."
