Polish president will not take part in FIFA World Cup opening ceremony
President Andrzej Duda on Monday decided not to take part in the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in Russia, head of the President's Office Krzysztof Szczerski announced on Tuesday.
"Yesterday, the president decided that he would not attend as a representative for Poland at the world cup football championships in Russia (...) For the time being we are speaking about the inauguration," said Szczerski. The event is due to start in mid-June.
Asked by a private radio broadcaster whether the president has already sent a congratulatory message to Vladimir Putin on his re-election as president of the Russian Federation, Szczerski said: "The president will not send congratulations to President Putin in connection with the vote which has taken place in Russia." He noted that so far there is no information on the official result of the elections in Russia.
"However, I do not exclude that the president will send official, diplomatic, courtesy congratulations when President Putin takes over office for a successive term," said Minister Szczerski.
