Polish police apprehend hacker sought by FBI
Polish police officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBSP) working in co-operation with the FBI detained a 44-year-old Ukrainian citizen suspected of committing cyber crimes, PAP has learned.
The suspect is accused of being a member of an organised-crime group responsible for hacking attacks and theft of credit card data through the use of malicious software. Losses caused by this criminal activity are estimated at several hundred million dollars.
The 44-year-old suspect is now awaiting extradition to the United States, where according to American law, he faces up to 30 years in prison.
Interpol had previously put out an international arrest warrant for the suspect. The Ukrainian was detained in Bielsko-Biala, southern Poland. "That’s where he was caught completely off-guard and arrested," said a Polish police spokesperson.
The suspect's apprehension is the result of interagency police co-operation at multiple levels.
