Polish PM to announce new pandemic restrictions today

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will present new coronavirus-related decisions and measures today as Poland has seen a heady rise in infection counts, his aide said on Wednesday morning.

"Today, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will announce further restrictions, further decisions that will limit our functioning and cap the number of social contacts. As long as there is no effective vaccine, the best cure for an epidemic is the method known since ancient times, i.e. isolation, restraining from interpersonal contacts" Michal Dworczyk, the head of the Prime Minister's Office, said.

Dworczyk also said that the government will do everything to prevent a complete lockdown in Poland "as we must think about the economic consequences of such far-reaching decisions." However, he admitted that the situation is "indeed serious."

Later, government spokesman Piotr Mueller tweeted that a press conference on the new pandemic measures will be held jointly by Morawiecki and Health Minister Adam Niedzielski at 2 pm.

Poland has most recently closed restaurants and bars and extended remote schooling.
