Polish MoD meets EU counterparts in Bulgaria

The role and tasks of the European Defence Agency (EDA), the future form of Permanent Structure Cooperation (PESCO), crisis management operations and military mobility were the focus of talks at an informal meeting of EU defence ministers in Sofia on Saturday.

Poland was represented at the talks by Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak. The Ministry of Defence announced on Twitter that talks included PESCO. "With great caution we approached the military mobility programme," Blaszczak added, as quoted by the ministry.

Blaszczak met his Bulgarian counterpart Krasimir Karakachanov. "During the meeting with the Bulgarian minister of defence I discussed the subject of cooperation in the field of modernisation, where opportunities are opening for our industry," the Polish MoD wrote on Twitter.

The Polish MoD also met German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen and French Minister for the Armed Forces Florence Parly. As he announced on Twitter, they discussed "issues connected with changes occurring in the command system of NATO, where Poland has declared activity."

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Fedrica Mogherini, who chaired Saturday's meeting, emphasised at a press conference that no decisions had been taken at the meeting and that PESCO was discussed within the framework of preparations for the June NATO summit.
