Polish lorry driver wanted in Hungary for migrant smuggling

A Polish lorry driver is on the run in Hungary after police found 32 migrants hiding in his trailer.

According to the website of the Hungarian police, the lorry driver escaped after traffic police ordered his vehicle, which carried Hungarian plates, to pull over near the village of Szatymaz, which lies close to the border with Serbia and Romania.

After stopping, the driver jumped from his cab and ran off, while a second passenger, travelling in the front seat, also attempted to escape but was caught. Both men are Polish.

When police opened the cargo trailer they found 32 men inside, all of whom claimed to be Syrian.

A warrant has been issued for the escaped driver, whose identity has already been established. The detained man will face charges of people smuggling.
