Zbigniew Rau, the Polish foreign minister, has congratulated Antony Blinken on his appointment as the new US secretary of state.

In his Twitter post, Zbigniew Rau said: "Congratulations and best wishes of success to @ABlinken upon confirmation as Secretary of State. Looking forward to our future cooperation and deepening PL-US partnership."

The US Senate approved Blinken on Tuesday.

Blinken was a deputy national security advisor in 2013-15 and a deputy secretary of state in 2015-17, during Barack Obama's presidency.

In a statement for PAP in October, Blinken said he was fully committed to ensuring the security of NATO members, including Poland. In the Senate, he said he agreed with the US Congress's opinion that the Russia-Germany's Nord Stream 2, a major gas pipeline project that Poland and other Central and Eastern European countries oppose, could harm energy security in Europe.
