Polish citizen among Strasbourg shooting victims

The French authorities have informed that a Polish citizen is among the victims of a shooting attack at a Christmas market in France, the Polish Foreign Ministry reported on Twitter on Wednesday.

The family of the injured has received consular assistance, the ministry added.

A gunman killed two people and wounded 14 near the picturesque Christmas market in the historic French city of Strasbourg on Tuesday evening before fleeing. Seven of the victims are in serious condition.

Laurent Nunez, secretary of state for the French interior ministry, said Wednesday that the attacker may have fled France. A spokesperson for the German Criminal Bureau said that Cherif Chekatt, a French citizen, known to authorities as a radicalised Islamist, is suspected of carrying out the attack.

Meanwhile, the Polish Embassy in Paris reported on its website that following the attack, France raised its security threat to the highest alert level and strengthened border controls.
