Polish artist's depiction of the liberation of Breda wins competition

An artwork project by Wroclaw (southern Poland) resident Tomasz Tomaszewski has won a competition for a sculpture or installation commemorating the liberation of Breda, the Netherlands, by the 1st Armored Division lead by General Stanisław Maczek in 1944.

The works were judged by officials from Wrocław and Breda. The winning artwork displays a fragment of terrain surrounded by a wall. Inside the walled area there is a path with tank-track marks stamped on it. Tomaszewski received PLN 25,000 (EUR 5,800) for his artwork.

On October 29, 2019, Breda will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the city's liberation from Nazi Germany. At that time, the opening of a new cultural institution - the Memorial of General Maczek - is planned, funded by the city authorities and residents of Breda. It will act as a museum, documentation centre and Polish-Dutch cooperation centre.

Due to the cultural cooperation of Wrocław and Breda, a Dutch artist is to paint an artistic mural on one of Wrocław's tenements.
