Polish and EU officials discuss Belarus

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz on Monday held talks with EU officials on the recent developments in Belarus around Sunday's presidential elections in the country, a source close to the EU has told PAP.

Earlier in the day, Morawiecki called on European Commission and European Council heads Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel to convene an extraordinary summit on Belarus.

Later the Polish PM discussed the matter with von der Leyen and the EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi. Morawiecki also received a written response from Michel to his earlier appeal. European Council president informed the Polish official that the Belarus issue would be raised at an EU summit in September, the EU source said.

According to the source, Czaputowicz discussed the situation in Belarus with EU diplomacy head Josep Borrell.

PAP has learnt that the situation in Belarus is on the agenda of an August informal meeting of foreign ministers in Berlin (EU Council for Foreign Affairs).
