Poles had 41.2 million payment cards at the end of 2018, up by 817,000 from the third quarter of 2018, the National Bank of Poland (NBP) reported on Monday.

Debit cards made up 79 percent of all payment cards issued in Poland. Their number increased by 2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018 to 32.6 million. Credit cards were the next most popular type of cards (14.2 percent) and their total number amounted to 5.87 mln quarter on quarter at the end of 2018.

Contactless payment cards continue to gain popularity in Poland, with 34.7 million cards with the contactless payment function present on the market at the end of December 2018. Their number increased by 1.2 million from the end of September. The share of contactless cards, in the total number of cards in Poland, increased to 84.1 percent at the end of the fourth quarter from 82.8 percent in the previous quarter.
