Poles are helping Ukrainians just as they help their neighbours and friends, and this is something that is needed very much, Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister of Poland, said on Saturday.

Morawiecki, along with Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski took part in a meeting with US President Joe Biden at a refugee support centre at Warsaw's National Stadium.

During a press briefing at the stadium, the prime minister pointed out that the last time he witnessed such unity among Poles was during the era of the Solidarity movement (in 1980 – PAP) when Poles from all walks of life united in protest against Poland's communist authorities.

"It is truly amazing how united we are, how we are able to help," pointed out the prime minister. "Today our great task is not to waste this effort."

"It is our duty to take care of things so that we can ensure conditions for peace, for the development of Ukraine that will come later," said Morawiecki after the meeting. "But, today, it is our duty to help those who have been most harmed by fate."

"Just like today, with President Biden, we saw people who came from Kharkiv, Mariupol, Odessa, from places that have been bombed, women and children who said: 'Our houses were razed to the ground, we barely escaped with our lives, we were wounded, and our friends, our neighbors stayed behind in Ukraine'," he said.

"Poland is on the lips of the West today, but let us remember we are in the middle, or maybe only at the beginning of a bloody conflict, a very difficult conflict. These times requires more from us," pointed out.

When asked what he thought of Russian President Vladimir Putin, when he observed what he did to the people he met at the stadium, Biden replied, "He is a butcher."
