Pole wins gold, sets national record at ISU speed skating World Cup

Andżelika Wójcik, a Polish women's speed skater, won gold and set a national record in the women's 500m competition at the ISU speed skating World Cup in Salt Lake City on Saturday.

Wójcik, aged 25, won gold having clocked 36.775 seconds. Angelina Golikova of Russia was second, ahead of another Russian, Olga Fatkulina.

Wójcik is the first Poland's skater in history to finish a 500m run in less than 37 seconds.

Kaja Ziomek of Poland, who placed 12th on Saturday, also beat her personal best, having completed the run in 37.394 seconds.

In the general classification of the World Cup, Wójcik advanced from tenth to fifth place. Ziomek is placed eighth in the ranking.
