Poland's largest retailer plans to open over 100 new stores this year

Poland's largest retailer, Biedronka, a unit of Portuguese Jeronimo Martins, plans to open over 100 new stores in Poland in 2020, Jeronimo Martins has reported.

In 2019, Biedronka opened 128 new stores in Poland but the net increase was 102 outlets. The total number of stores reached 3,002 at the end of 2019.

This year's plans of Jeronimo Martins envisage 50 new Hebe drugstores. In 2019, the company opened 43 new Hebe chemist stores.

In 2019, Biedronka's sales reached EUR 12.62 billion, up by 7.9 percent from the previous year (8.8 percent up in PLN). Like-for-like sales grew by 5.8 percent in the same period.

In the fourth quarter alone, Biedronka's sales reached EUR 3.38 billion, up by 10.6 percent from the previous year (10.3 percent up in PLN). Like-for-like sales grew by 7.7 percent in the same period.

Hebe drugstores generated sales of EUR 259 mln in 2019, up by 24.9 percent on 2018. In the last three months of 2019, the Polish chain's revenue reached EUR 79 mln and was up by 24.6 percent from the previous year.
