Poland is world's fourth largest exporter and sixth biggest producer of furniture, Michal Strzelecki of the Polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers has told PAP.

Strzelecki added that Polish furniture is mostly exported to EU countries while the United States is the biggest non-EU buyer of Polish furniture products.

He also stressed that if the industry wants to further develop it must look for new prospective markets as Europe "is becoming too crowded."

Strzelecki, also an expert at the Polish Investment and Trade Agency, noted that the US is a very large and absorptive market but at the same a very difficult market, not only because products have to be sent to a far away market, but also due to distribution problems.

Speaking on the promotion of Polish furniture in the US, Strzelecki said that 21 furniture companies are taking part in this year's International Contemporary Furniture Fair that started in New York on Sunday. Last year, Polish companies exported to the US furniture worth EUR 334 million.

According to the Central Statistical Office, Poland's furniture market is made up of over 27,000 firms, mostly micro and small companies, employing some 151,000 people. Ninety percent of the total production is exported. Germany remains to be the biggest buyer of Polish-made furniture.

Poland's overall furniture export reached EUR 9.2 billion in 2017. China, world's largest furniture maker, exported furniture worth EUR 48.3 billion.
