Poland wants to place its northern Gdańsk Shipyard, the birthplace of the 1980-founded Solidarity Union, on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Deputy Culture Minister Magdalena Gawin told PAP on Wednesday.

Gawin, in Paris for the 40th UNESCO General Conference, said she hoped Poland's afforts to have the shipyard entered on the UNESCO list will prove successful. Poland's National Heritage Institute launched the campaign in September.

The Tuesday-launched UNESCO General Conference is being attended by delegates from 193 countries. At the meeting, Gawin outlined the main points of Poland's policy on the UNESCO forum and announced Poland's plans to run for a seat on the UNESCO Executive Council.
