Poland refutes US envoy's claims about LGBT rights - Dep FM Leszek Szymański/PAP

Poland refutes US Ambassador Georgette Mosbacher's claim that Poland is "on the wrong side of history" regarding LGBT rights, Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz said on Friday. He informed that Mosbacher was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in the matter on Thursday.

In a Tuesday interview for the Wirtualna Polska web portal, Mosbacher said that Poland was on the wrong side of history in its treatment of LGBT rights, and noted that human rights were universal.

Commenting on an open letter signed by 50 ambassadors to Poland in support of the LGBT community, Mosbacher said she understood and respected the fact that Poland is a Catholic country, and assured that no one wanted to undermine that. She pointed out, however, that the US believed in the equality of all people, and that anti-LGBT rhetoric only alienated Poland. Such alienation, she said, could translate into negative business and investment decisions and influence military issues.

Commenting on Mosbacher's words to PAP on Friday, Przydacz said that Mosbacher had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry in the matter on Thursday. He added that Poland's Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau had postponed a Tuesday-planned meeting with Mosbacher to a later date.

Przydacz said the Polish side could not agree with Mosbacher's statements, especially her claim that Poland was on the wrong side of history with regard to LGBT rights. He stressed that over history Poland had treated sexual minorities much better than other countries, and assured that Polish law guaranteed the non-discriminative treatment of all people regardless of their origin, beliefs or sexual orientation.

"One can safely say that Poland has always stood on the right side of history. A history that has often bound our countries and peoples," Przydacz said.

Przydacz said that the partnership between the US and Poland was "strong and enduring," but noted that Mosbacher's words "could have a negative impact on (Poland's- PAP) very good relations and bilateral cooperation with the US."
