Poland ready to offer assistance to Germany following tragic floods

Poland is prepared to send help to flood-battered Germany if asked, the deputy defence minister said on Monday.

"If the German authorities say they need aid, we will definitely act," Wojciech Skurkiewicz said during a public radio interview, adding that Polish firefighters would be the first to be dispatched to Germany, if necessary.

At least 157 people have died in the worst flooding Germany has seen in decades after western parts of the country were hit by severe storms and torrential rain. Hundreds of houses, bridges and roads have either been destroyed or damaged, while hundreds of people remain missing.

In neighbouring Belgium, at least 31 people have lost their lives in the floods and 163 are still missing.

On Friday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki sent Chancellor Angela Merkel his condolences over the deaths and pledged any assistance Poland can provide.

Poland has also offered aid to Belgium.
