Poland condemns attack on coalition forces in Iraq
Poland condemns a Monday rocket attack on US-led coalition forces in Erbil, Iraq, the foreign ministry said in a Tuesday statement.
"Poland condemns the missile attack on the Global Coalition base in Erbil. We express our condolences to the victims and their families," the Polish foreign ministry wrote.
"As a member of the Global Coalition, we call for the punishment of the guilty and their principals, and we support Iraq on its way to stabilisation and in the fight against terrorism," the ministry added.
At least three missiles hit Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in northern Iraq, killing one civilian and injuring five, including an American soldier, the US military stationed in Iraq reported.
Two rockets fell near housing estates and one struck the American airbase in Erbil.
It was the first time in nearly two months that a Western military or diplomatic site was targeted in Iraq
Kurdistan's interior ministry confirmed in a statement that "several rockets" had hit the city. It said that security services had started a "thorough investigation" and called on civilians to stay at home until further notice.
Turkey has been leading an armed offensive against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq for several days.
