A hapless pensioner has become an overnight sensation after being filmed ‘surfing’ on top of his car down a canal.

The 62-year old driver had careered into the water after pressing the accelerator pedal on his motor too hard over the May Day weekend.

Losing control, the unnamed man then plunged into the water before climbing out of the window and scrambling onto the roof of his Chevrolet Orlando.

At one point he is seen in conversation with another elderly man walking beside the canal who appears to be giving the stranded pensioner advice. 

After several minutes the plucky pensioner gathers up courage to leap onto the grassy bank before the fire brigade arrived to tow the car out.

The video has now been viewed over 540,000 times. 

Police spokeswoman Magdalena Ciska sad: “After 3 pm [on May 2] we received a notification that at St. Wojciech street, a 62-year-old man driving a Chevrolet towards Pruszcz Gdański, did not adjust his speed to the road conditions, lost control of the vehicle and drove into the Radunia Canal.

The car was later dragged out of the water by the fire brigade and the man was fined PLN 3,000.Police materials

“The man managed to get ashore on his own. He was examined by rescuers and was not injured. He was sober.”

The man was given a PLN 3,000 (EUR 680) fine.
