Parliamentary elections to be held on October 13 - president's spokesman
President Andrzej Duda has signed a decision to schedule elections to the Sejm (lower house) and the Senate for October 13, the president's spokesman Blazej Spychalski said on Tuesday., adding that the president's decision was sent to the Prime Minister's Office.
After publication of the president's decision scheduling elections in the Journal of Laws, no later than on the fifth day after the day of scheduling the elections - the election campaign will formally start.
"As promised by President Andrzej Duda in recent days, that he would like to set the election date as soon as possible, I would like to announce that because today (...) in its opinion sent to the President's Office, the State Electoral Commission (PKW) did not raise any remarks regarding the proposed October 13 date for general elections in Poland, President Andrzej Duda has literally just signed the relevant ordinance on the designation of October 13 as the date of parliamentary elections, the presidential spokesman told a press briefing in front of the Presidential Palace.
Last week, President Andrzej Duda said that he would announce the date of the elections immediately after receiving an opinion from the PKW on a draft decision on the date of parliamentary elections.
Duda, speaking at the time to Polsat News television station, revealed that he had proposed to the State Electoral Commission Sunday, October 13, because he would like the election campaign to be as short as possible.
Under the Polish Constitution, elections to the Sejm (lower house) and Senate "shall be ordered by the President of the Republic no later than 90 days before the expiry of the four year period beginning with the commencement of the Sejm's and Senate's term of office, and he shall order such elections to be held on a non-working day which shall be within the 30 day period before the expiry of the four year period beginning from the commencement of the Sejm's and Senate's term of office."
