Parliament okays 2020 state budget execution
The Sejm, the lower house of Polish parliament, has approved the government's report on the execution of the state budget in 2020.
The report was passed with 234 votes in favour, 213 against and three abstentions.
According to the Finance Ministry, budget revenue was close to PLN 420 billion (EUR 91.8 billion) in 2020 and spending was at PLN 505 billion (EUR 110.4 billion), producing a deficit of nearly PLN 85 billion (EUR 18.6 billion).
Initially, the 2020 budget law assumed a fully-balanced budget, with no deficit, but the government's plans were foiled by the coronavirus pandemic which took hold of the country in the spring of 2020, and forced the government to pump billions of zlotys into an economy that was partially frozen at times owning to the government-imposed lockdown.
However, some of the pandemic relief money has not been included in the budget and constitutes an additional cost for Poland.
