Palestinians like Poles under partitions - Palestinian ambassador

The situation of the Palestinians is like that of the Poles during the partition years, Palestinian Ambassador in Poland Mahmoud Khalifa said in a Tuesday radio interview.

Khalifa added that he hoped Poland would not follow countries which have moved their Israeli embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Commenting US President Donald Trump's decision to move the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and recognise the city as Israel's capital, Khalifa observed that the US President lacked understanding of the situation in the Middle East.

Khalifa explained that Palestinians were against the move as Jerusalem lay on Palestinian territory that has been occupied by Israel since 1967, and because it closed the possibility of forming separate Israeli and Palestinian states.

In this context Khalifa observed that the situation of the Palestinians today resembled that of the Poles in the years when their country was partitioned by Russia, Prussia and Austria.

Referring to recent skirmishes between Palestinians and Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip, in which around 60 Palestinians were killed and around 2,800 injured, Khalifa observed that the Palestinian protesters were young people who wanted to inform the world about Israeli crimes against their people
