The Omicron variant now accounts for 84 percent of all positive Covid tests, the health ministry's spokesperson has said.

Poland has been struggling to contain the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, now dominated by Omicron. The country reported 24,404 new coronavirus cases and 10 deaths on Monday, down by 27.1 percent week on week.

"Today, Omicron has practically saturated the majority of the population, because we have found the Omicron variant in nearly 10,200 sequenced samples, which is 84 percent of all sequenced samples," Wojciech Andrusiewicz told a Monday press conference.

In his opinion, within a week, the other Delta variant "will probably be forgotten about."
