Warsaw’s National Stadium has been closed with immediate effect after a structural flaw was detected in a roof element.

Kamil Bortniczuk, the sports minister, said the problem meant that the stadium has to be closed “immediately" and that it will remain closed until the reasons for the flaw are diagnosed and a solution found.

The stadium, which is the largest sporting arena in Poland, was due to host the Poland-Chile football match in several days.

Bortniczuk said the game itself was not endangered and would take place elsewhere in Poland. He added that the alternative location could be known later today.
