Medical boffins scoop prestigious ranking for WORLD’S ‘most cited work’
Six Polish scientists are among the most citied in the world, according to the prestigious Clarivate Analytics ranking.
The scientists, five cardiologists and an epidemiologist, were chosen for the value of their research to the development of world science, determined by the production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1 percent for their field.
The 2018 list was based on the Web of Science service, a platform for comprehensive citation search with access to an extensive database of scientific publications and journals.
The five cardiologists are members of the Polish Cardiac Society. Professor Piotr Ponikowski from Wrocław Medical University, one of the laurates and the Society’s chairman, said in a press release: “As the president of the Polish Society of Cardiology, I am proud that once again the work of Polish cardiologists has been recognized and appreciated in this prestigious list of the most cited scientists in the world.
“It shows the high position of Polish cardiology and underlines the importance of Poles' contributions to the development of world science."
Prof. Ponikowski’s research is focused on acute heart failure treatment. The other most cited cardiologists are Prof. Adam Torbicki (Otwock), Prof. Andrzej Budaj (Warsaw), Prof. Michał Tendera (Katowice) and for the first time Prof. Dariusz Dudek (Kraków).
The standalone epidemiologist in the group is Prof. Jolanta Lissowska from Warsaw, who studies the links between lung cancer and other diseases, such as HPV.
The 2018 Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers list gathered over 6,000 scientists and researchers from around the globe. Their expertise was divided into 21 fields and in some cases was qualified are cross-field.
