Mayor becomes local hero after demolishing building with his own hands to save on costs
A town mayor has become a local hero after rolling up his sleeves to tear down an old garage with his bare hands – and to make savings on demolition costs.
Edward Maniura, mayor of the small town of Lubliniec in southern Poland, decided to take matters into his own hands after being told the demolition to make way for a new parking space for bikes would cost 25,000 PLN.
Realising the council’s budget wouldn’t cover the costs, he enlisted the help of a local councillor and town hall staff to do the job themselves.
Photos posted on social media show the mayor and his helpers chiselling, hammering and shovelling their way in to the hearts of locals as they spent two days taking the building apart.
Maniura later said: “Economical and deliberate spending of funds is the basis for proper management of public finances, which is why I am very happy that thanks to the social work that I have done with satisfaction, the town of Lubliniec will save several thousand zlotys.”
The mayor has now been flooded with praise from locals.
Posting on the town hall’s Facebook page, one man commented: “Bravo! Super attitude! If I had known, I would have helped gladly.”
Another said: “Bravo, having such a mayor is a treasure.”
While yet another posted: “Lubliniec has the BEST MAYOR.”
